I recently read a report from the World Health Organization that (not surprisingly) wasn’t published in main stream papers, that indicated the average IQ of Americans is 14 to 20% below the IQ of people from most other countries...NO JOKE!
I imagine it wasn’t reported in papers because it would have caused outrage amoung said Americans..............................Just a little food for thought.

The american constitution was directly derived from the ideas of the French philosophers from the so called "enlightment" . They inspired the French revolution and the Declarationf the human rights. You how them the (relative) freedom and democracy you are enjoying today. These philosophers were themselves inspired by the English habeas corpus and the parliamentary system that England had introduced before everyone else. Europe made many mistakes when it was still powerfull but some of us have learnt from that experience, for instance, we know that invading an Arabic country and running it has always ended in blodshed. You are right my country has a dirty colonial history but I hope it will have learnt from its mistakes.
The way America reacted was not, in my opinion, the only possible way.
France, for instance, had to suffer from terrorism in Paris at the end of the 80’s/ early 90’s. Many bombs exploded everywhere killing lots of peoples, so for the French the 11th of Sept had a taste of deja vu.
The islamist terrorists who were bombing the French came from Algeria, many of them had also spent time in Afganistan fighting the Russians with American weapons and American money.
In Algeria they were fighting a guerrila war after they’d won the 1st ever free elections (with massive popular support!!!) and that the military junta had decided to cancel the elections to prevent them to create an islamist state.

They stepped up security measures all over France and they fought with the intelligence services to prevent the terrorists to strike again. 10 years down the line the Islamists had lost all popular support at home and they had almost ceased to be a problem. (Sept the 11th and the following war saved their movement!)
If France had invaded Algeria 1000’s of French lives would have been lost and France would be like the US, the most hated nation in the Arabic and muslim world. And the reason why France did not intervene with the army is that they knew what Arabic countries were about ( They had colonised many of them! ) .
The Islamists were putting bombs in France because they were desperate to internationalise their war in order to rally around them all the muslims of the world ( like the moujahidins in Afganistan or the palestinians had done before them).

Therefore I genuinely think it was not in the interrest of the American people to conquer and occupy Irak because It is adding up to the feelings of hatred, injustice and frustration that muslim and Arabic peoples have towards the US. Don’t forget that the US have been backing Israel against the palestinians for several decades and that everytime the UN passed a resolution against Israel if could never be enforced because the US would put their veto. The view that most people have in Europe is that there are not on one side the good and on the other side the evil but that things are much more complicated than that, Also most of us think (including in the UK, in Spain, In Italy...) that war should be the very last resort when there is no other option, and then, if it is the case, countries should abide by the international laws.
Because when the first democracy in the world decides to do a "prehemptive war" against a rogue state without the consent of the UN, to breach the Geneva convention in Afganistan by declaring its prisoners " unlawful fighters" (which does not exist in international law) and to do many other things which are unfortunately inevitable in most wars ( torture, killing of civilians, destruction of cities and holy places...) THEN it gives the right to other countries to do the same and it is then end of international law, it means more chaos and more wars.

No, but it does serve the interrests of those who finance the politicians.
I really think the US could have shown the world a better example, but I also think the Bush is not acting on behalf of the American people but that he is a puppet in the hands of big multinational companies ( the petrol industries being the main ones) who have vasts interrests in Irak. And because these people also control all the media intustry in America they were make people believe that there were links between al kaida and Saddam. The only democratic countries that expressed those views were France and to a lesser extent Germany but unfortunately they did it in a very clumsy way and were not understood by the Americans.

I think you could probably have found a better example of how to deal with terrorism. It dosen’t surprise me that the french did virtually nothing after being attacked and Americans haven’t taken the advice of the French in over 100 years. You are wrong in that the U.S. is the second most hated country in the arab world, Israel is pub. enemy #1. Also I did think war was appropraite when it began but in hindsight it has caused many problems. I don’t hate Bush and now that we’re over there the arguements for going there are becoming moot. It is hard to beleive people that video tape beheadings aren’t evil. Filming prisoners of war being tortured or humiliated is also evil. War fuck people up and allows the darkest sides of Man to be unleashed. That is why war should be a last resort solution.
I do not hate George Bush either, I would rather spend my energy in a more positive way. I really wish that things are going to get better in this world and especialy in Irak but I can’t see how it could get better. I am really curious to see how Bush is going to get out of this because if US troops leave it will be a complete chaos so Us troops and security firms ( mercenaries) are going to have to stay for a long long time. Good luck to them. It is a high price to pay for a poor kid to be able to go to University .And in a way it is a good thing that the believe in all the propaganda they hear on the US media, they think they are dying for their country. If they knew they are putting their life at risk for a few rich people, it would surely make it harder for them.
Wars have always been fought by poor people for the interests of rich people, there are a few exeptions but this war is certainly not one of them. |

Today I read that 48 million americans (the population of England or Spain) have no health insurance and that 50% of the American people do not have the healh insurance they really need. Also, according to the UN there is the same proportion of children who live under the poverty line in the US as there is in Russia.
Is Mr Bush doing anything about that? Of course not, his friends are powerful business people who make millions in the weapons or petrol industries, not the "working poor". I don’t agree with the idea that American media is a propaganda machine. Every media outlet has an angle but the U.S. media didn’t try to defend the U.S. soldiers who humiliated the Iraqis. The U.S. domestic issue has definately suffered because of the focus on foreign affairs your right and that is a complaint of many of our nations liberals but now that we’re in this thing we can’t very well just leave. Those domestic facts are interesting perhaps you should show them to the people in the polish joke section they seem to think Americans are rich and fat. I know there are some American soldiers who disagree w/ the war but I wouldn’t put to much weight in what one soldier says after all they’re fighting a war, that isn’t very fun I imagine. |

I don’t think we disagree fundamentaly and if my country was attacking another country god knows what I would do? But it is your duty as a citizen to think for yourself and to question what you hear in the media. Try to follow the Iraki conflicts through the British, Irish or Canadian newspapers for instance and you will soon be amazed by what I call propaganda and that you call "angle". I have been doing it for several months and I can assure you that it looks as though the US media and the non US media are talking about 2 completely different wars. Thinking for yourself it is the only way to keep a true democracy, freedom and justice, it is an ongoing and never-ending struggle where nothing can ever been taken for granted. That’s what, as a teacher, I try to teach my pupils, I want them to have a critical minset, that the only way they can ever be free. For instance what does terrorist mean? |

The French during the Algerian War of independance used to call the independance fighters "terrorists" because they could not fight like the french with convetional means and had to resort to guerrila warefare, bombs etc...The Belgian Resistance were also called terrorist when our country was occupied by Germany.
My personal definition is that war can take many shapes and terrorism is 0ne of them, in all cases innocent people get killed and that’s what matter to me
As soon as people start assuming that their democratic rights are there forever they start losing them. So as an free American citizen your duty is to be aware of what is going on, if you don’t exert this right you are then accepting to give up democracy and freedom. |

I am aware of the unpopularity of the war, many people in western countries are going to oppose almost any war because they beleive wars should become some ancient barbaric memory. That is an admirable thing to hope for, yet unrealistic. War is the coercian of the ideals of one group over the other through force and while many ideals can coexist and debate over the best solution some can’t. You are correct in that the term terrorist has been abused in some cases for propaganda reasons but when you enter another country to kill their civilians you are most definately a terrorist. |

But in such matters I think we can not take a manichean view, we have to look beyong the good and bad. The world is more complex than that.
I don’t regard the Americans as "bad", I just think they are mislead, they may have very good intentions but the end result is that this war is causing a lot of human misery on all sides and I believe that it could have been avoided. Sadam was beyond doubts a "bad" guy but can you imagine what sort of chaos there would be if western democracies dedided to use the same methods with all the countries ruled by "bad" dictators? The truth is, in my modest opinion, that most of these countries don’t have the same oil resources as Irak or they are allies of western powers. |

Western democracies will never use those methods for the simple fact that they are democracies. Despite what some Americans and Europeans think america will never be run in the same iraq was under Sadam. You don’t see things in good and bad, well you just said you beleive Americans are mislead which means you don’t value their opinion. I’ve tried to take the non-objective p.o.v. To do as you say "look beyond the good and bad" and gain some greater perspective. I found that this is near impossible, we humans all have certain values and we see things in good or bad.
