Marine vs. army
Posted by: Ryan on February 14, 2005 @ 2:00 pm

Go Back

a marine is home on leave, in his dress blues. decides he’s gonna go to the nicest place in town. Finishing his meal, he heads to the latrine where he meets a small boy. "wow are you a real marine?" the boy asks.
"Yes I am kid you wanna wear my hat?" says the marine
"Yes, Oh Boy!" says the kid, he begins to march around with his new "cover" on. An Army ranger walks in and the kid stands stunned.
"Wow are you a real Army ranger?" the boy asks.
The ranger answers," Yes i am kid, you wanna suck my dick?"
The kid responds " oh no sir im not a real marine im only wearing his hat!" ha ha

Comment: Hey soldier10 get your story straight army infantry doesn’t train Marines. Besides learn how to spell. It is CORPS moron. That is why you couldn’t make it in the Marines because dumb apes like yourself don’t know how to spell. Ahh forget it you probably can’t read this anyway. It isn’t even worth my time to stoop down to your level.

Comment: A marine who just finished his Basic Training from PI, gets the same or like most of the time MORE respects that A man who has been in the ARMY for most of his life and maybe becomes a RANGER and that’s if he got the balls. What do you think about that..

and I couldnt seem to find any Army soldiers around there...

I was in the Army and went through AIT with all the services, at the time the Marines seemed wound a little too tight
But, I think the Corps (see, I spelled it right) has earned all the respect they get. The Corps has a lot of credits built up from WWII in the Pacific. They’ll be spending those for years to come, then they can start on the ones from Korea, Viet Nam, etc.

The Ranger probably thought Marines do that kind of thing because Marines have the balls to suck dick and eat shit to keep this Great Nation of ours safe! They told us to open up the Embassy, or "we’ll blow you away." And then they looked up and saw the Marines on the roof with these really big guns, and they said in Somali, "Igaralli ahow," which means "Excuse me, I didn’t mean it, my mistake." [Karen Aquilar, in the U.S. Embassy; Mogadishu, Somalia, 1991]

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They’re aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They’ve got really short hair and they always go for the throat. [RAdm. "Jay" R. Stark, USN; 10 November 1995]

And by the way SF doesnt have basic training...its a pipe line that lasts about a year or so, and the Army SF medical course is the best in the military, after all thats why marines are sent here. and last but not least why is it that durring the invasion of Iraq the US Army Green Berets were the first there and not your "AMAZING MARINES"? Hell our regular MI units (computer geeks) were in front of the marines and were told to hold up and wait for them so....................what does that say about the marines?

Comment: jarhead0331 UMMM wake up you dumbass get it through you thick meat head, in case you haven’t heard the marines have no Special Forces unit that is officially recognized by the Special Operations Command (for all branches), it did at one time recognize it and funded it,...... but then it stopped because they’re no different than regular Army paratroopers, there’s nothing special about your "Force Recon" but the name, and they were AT LAST called out as nothing but a bunch of un-organized pussies!! Oh Yea and wheres the great history and war stories of the “Force Recon”?….What a joke. Last but not least why is it that more and more marines are getting out (to include your "Force Recon" and snipers and infantry) and going into the Army Special Forces Qualification course and many are struggling? So just shut your cum dumpster.

From: SGTOFMARINES on April 5, 2005 @ 1:15 am
Comment: Overall, a basically trained Marine is more disciplined,
and probably performs better under stress, and with his rifle than a basically trained soldier.
The Marines try to keep all members combat ready (i.e. the supply guy, the cook, the admin guy,
all get rotated for combat training annually) whereas the Army does not...admin guys are admin guys.
Those are facts I was a soldier and becuase the Army was just not the place to find challenge I decided
to enter the Marine Corps where I had the chance to start over . Nowadays, the Army has gotten too P.C. (politically correct) and it sucks.
I mean, what the hell is this Stress Card crap?!

From: SGTOFMARINES on April 5, 2005 @ 1:24 am
Comment: you right DAMON.Marines do not have any special forces,
but we do have whats called "special forces capable.
" We have MEU which are trained well enough to be considered special forces but we do not belong in SOCOM.
At the end, both branches focuses on different things (just like all special forces - green berets, SEALs, etc - do different things),
so when it comes to it, you can’t really say whos better than the other - they both specialize in different things.
Also, as you progress in the military, you will learn that all branches work together.
This is easily seen in Afghanistan. What happened first? Airstrikes by the Air Force/Navy.
Then the Marines came in and took over Kandahar, etc. Once establishing it, who went in? The Army (101st Airborne). So again, both branches are different

the airfield so that the Marines could occupy it. Further more in Afghanistan when the war started where were the Marines?
It was Navy Seal, Green Berets, Delta Force and YOURS Truly Army Rangers. Lcpl Horning Are you jump qualified?
Every Army Ranger is jump qualified not every Marines is... That’s what makes us "Special". Secondy 54 hours for a
"Crucible"? Let me tell you Lcpl Horning ours is not measured in hours, but instead by weeks! And we do it in the
mountains of West Virginia not the "Hills" of Camp Pendelton. 174,000 Marines? 6,000 Army Airborne Rangers?
who really are the "few the proud"? The Army has more Battle Streamers than Any service, The Army is the senior service
that’s why the Marines are behind us in order of precedence! Rangers Lead The Way!

in this stupid conversation. Looser Ranger wannabe, by far the only
people that deserves my respect in the army is the ranger and W.P officers cuz I fought along them,
other than that you all a bunch of looser PVTs.

From: Dean on April 8, 2005 @ 2:06 am
Comment: I must have hit a nerve with SGT of Marines. I will try to make this simple for you. 1. Ranger training is longer and tougher
than Marine boot camp and you know this! 2. Our cruciable is measured in weeks not hours! 3. We are all Jumped qualified
you are not! History... Marines, Rangers and the 82nd Airborne invaded Grenada... Rangers and the 82nd Airborne jumped in
Marines DID NOT! (They are not qualified) Panama Rangers and the 82nd jumped in, Marines DID NOT! (They are not qualified)
Haiti They cleared an amphibious assalut ship ...Marines included and had the 10th Mountian Division on board and they were
on Haiti before any Marines and with Grenada and Panama. Now who get to the battle first? History is changing SGT! I believe
the Air Force has been the first lately? If you want the History of WWII I can show you that our Motto lives on.
Rangers Lead the Way!

From: ABNRNG on April 8, 2005 @ 2:54 am
Comment: Dean, Keep Sgt of Marines informed. United States Army Rangers continue to lead the way in American military missions
throughout the world, operating on the frontlines in Iraq and the Global War on Terror. Along with aiding Task Force 121’s
capture of Saddam Hussein and providing security for the Jessica Lynch rescue, Army Rangers are playing key roles in
neutralizing Ba’ath party extremists and smoking Al-Qaeda operatives out of remote caves in Afghanistan. Rangers are the
Army’s elite commandos, parachuting in behind enemy lines, securing airfields and preparing the ground before regular
Army units arrive in hostile territory.

From: NavyGal on April 8, 2005 @ 3:00 am
Comment: Hey Sgt Of Marines , just a little more history. Rangers have been on the forefront of every major military
operation in the 20th century, ranging from leading the Normandy invasion on D-Day in World War II, to
restoring democracy and capturing Manuel Noriega in Panama as part of Operation Just Cause, to providing
security for United Nations peacekeepers in Somalia. Ready to deploy to global hotspots at a moment’s notice,
Rangers are the premier commando unit in the American military, able to conduct ambushes, reconnaissance
and assaults by land, sea or air. Rangers Lead The Way!.... Don’t believe me? Ask your Gunny.

From: AirForceVet on April 8, 2005 @ 3:12 am
Comment: Hey Sgt of Marines with all due respect, Rangers do "Lead the way". Due to their lethal arsenal of advanced military and tactical
specialties combined with superior physical and mental conditioning, Army Rangers are considered among the very best. From
conducting classified missions around the world to rescuing American POWs, Rangers serve as the tip of the spear for American
military operations. How do I know this? I was a load master on a C-141and flew many missions with Rangers and Marines on
board. Some of the missions were training missions. The Rangers Jumped into the "Zone" while the Marines walk out the back
ramp after we landed. In all Fairness, you simply cannot compare an Army Airborne Ranger to a Marine. To do this would be like
comparing a Marine to a Boy Scout. If you are a Marine, remember, Semper Fi Devildog and remember contrary to popular belief,
Marines are not always the first in. Nothing can stop the U.S.Air Force.

From: Green Beret on April 8, 2005 @ 5:50 pm
Comment: This isn’t about which branch of the military is better. Did anyone account for teamwork? We’re all on the same side here.
The U.S. military works as a team. One branch may do somthing for the other, but thats TEAMWORK. There are no better people, the whole
military works together. They wouldnt have certain units, divisions, branches of the military for no reason. They all have different specialties, but the first
thing to consider in combat, is working together, or slump to the ground in a lifeless heap. Unit Integrity. This rivalry is a bunch of bullshit for kids. Grow up.

Comment: The four posts before the one above mine were all done by the same person.
Look at the times they were posted, and how they were mysteriously from someone
representing each branch of the service, with the exception of the Marines. I would
expect a true Army Ranger to be more clever using tactics of deception than that.

Also, why is everyone who attacks the Marines comparing the whole branch to one
elite part of their branch? Have you no pride for your entire branch?

To any Marines wasting their time insulting other branches: Did you not learn any discipline
at PI or SD? Part of pride is being content with who you are, without having to pull others down.
Man up, Marines, and start representing the Corps better.

From: NavyGal on April 12, 2005 @ 1:45 am
Comment: Hey 0311 Is it ok to type this now? Or is it to early? Who knows what time people come on to read the
postings? You need to relax a little. This is a public forum where we can express ourselves regardless
of the time. Did you not or have you not learned anything about freedom of expression? You set a poor
example and should be ashamed to say they were from the same guy/girl. If you knew anything about SF
you would know that the author is well informed. I sense a little hostility/jealousy. Don’t get mad perhap
you could be one of the "True" few and the proud, Special Forces. With your permission all services
included. Man up Marine! P.S chech some of the other times Devil Dog.

From: 0311 on April 12, 2005 @ 5:23 pm
Comment: It seems suspicious that Dean, who has been arguing for a while would post on April 8, 2005 @ 2:06 am,
and then ABNRNG on April 8, 2005 @ 2:54 am, then NavyGal on April 8, 2005 @ 3:00 am, and next
AirForceVet on April 8, 2005 @ 3:12 am, when previously there had been only a few posts within the past
few days. To mysteriously have well-informed posts all within an hour’s timespan, and each representing
the Navy, Army Airborne Rangers, and Air Force...then the Air Force vet uses the word "we" when describing
the duties of the Rangers...perhaps Dean got his personas mixed up.

To Dean’s Persona of NavyGal: You lighten up, and allow me to expressed my distrust in the integrity of
random message board posters. I am not ashamed of anything for making this accusation, and you should
be ashamed for trying to silence my right to question things. I never argued with any of the information presented
in the posts, either...it all seemed relatively accurate to me.

From: Army Recruit on April 14, 2005 @ 2:58 pm
Comment: Most NONE of you in here seem to have a clue as to what you’re talking about. Marine Corps and Army combat-arms are both about equal. In terms of skills,
a standard Marine is NOTHING to a Special Forces soldier. Special Forces training is loooooong and HARD. They are the SPECIAL FORCES, the elite; they
are trained in everything from combat diving to mountain warfare to parachuting operations, they HAVE to know at least one foreign language, etc....no standard
Marine is trained like this. The difference between the Marine Corps and other services is that the Marines are the only service that trains everyone to be a rifleman.
The Navy, Army, Air Force, etc....don’t do that. But that is because they are larger and would lose too many recuits if they forced them to undergo that training, plus it
costs a lot money-wise. The Marine corps is a lot smaller. (cont’d)

From: Army Recruit on April 14, 2005 @ 2:58 pm
Comment: The United States Marine Corps is the best CONVENTIONAL fighting force in the world. No other country has a military branch like the USMC. It has its own air
wing and land force and thus is like a miniature military in its own right that is very maneuverable due to its small size.

But standard Marines are NOT equivalent to the elite soldiers of the other branches. A standard Marine is a lot tougher and better trained than a standard Air Force
person, but someone who is say an Air Force Pararescueman is a lot more trained than any standard Marine.

From: Army Recruit on April 14, 2005 @ 2:59 pm
Comment: The Marines differ just in that everyone is a rifleman. An Army mechanic is trained with the M16, but he/she is necessarily a rifleman. The Marine mechanic is. As
for combat-arms, those are about equal. There isn’t much difference between an Army infantryman and a Marine infantryman.

And also, the Rangers are NOT the Special Forces. The Special Forces are the ones who wear the Green Beret. The Rangers wear the brown beret. And Ranger
School is something many Marines very much desire to go to. Standard Marines are NOT Airborn-qualified, which Army Rangers are. Standard Marines have NOT
been through Ranger School. Neither are standard Army personnel. Rangers are Special Operations forces.

From: Army Recruit on April 14, 2005 @ 2:59 pm
Comment: The main difference with the Marines is two-fold. One, they are all trained as rifleman, which doesn’t really mean they are tougher than the Army or anything, just
a bit better-trained (and that only goes for the non-Infantry Marines---Army infantry is just as tough as Marine infantry), and two, the people who become Marines
are usually a bit more hardcore than the other services. People who join the military for money, college benefits, etc.....go to the Navy, Air Force, and somewhat to
the Army. People who truly join because they want to be a real soldier, tend to go the Marine Corps because it pays the least, offers the least benefits, and,
disregarding Army, Navy, and Air Force Special Operations forces, it has the toughest training. Hence, Marines also tend to be more gung-ho and want to be
MARINES, instead of just the "I joined up for college money types."

From: Army Recruit on April 14, 2005 @ 2:59 pm
Comment: The Army and the Marines though are the queens of battle. Both are tough as hell. Oh, big deal, Army basic training is 9 weeks, Marine Corps basic training is 12
weeks, plus the Marines get a flashy uniform. Doesn’t mean they’re better. Both services are tough, especially in their combat arms.

But please people, get that STUPID idea out of your heads that a standard Marine is equal to an Army Ranger or a Special Forces soldier. Special Forces are a
Special Operations soldier as well, the most elite aside from the Delta Force. The job of Special Forces is guerilla warfare, and training foreign military forces,
as well as some other things. The job of the Rangers is as a very hardcore form of infantry.

From: Army Recruit on April 14, 2005 @ 3:00 pm
Comment: If you join the Marines, you’ll be in the best conventional military force, but the Marines don’t really have any elite branch, aside from the Force Recon teams. The
Recon teams are the Marines equivalent to Rangers and Special Forces, etc.....NOT standard Marines.

Same goes with helicopter pilots. Standard Marine Corps helicopter pilots are often a bit more gung ho it is said than standard Army pilots, but the standard
Marine helo pilots are NOT equal to the Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment or the Air Force’s Special Ops helo pilots. These, however, are the top
5% of those branches aviation.

Marines, Army, Air Force, Navy, etc....all are cool I think. Wars are fought with both soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines.

As for me, I am enlisting in the Army.

From: Feet on April 15, 2005 @ 7:51 pm

Comment: Good job recruit. And to everyone else can’t we all just get along?

From: Army Recruit on April 16, 2005 @ 3:13 pm
Comment: Well, I don’t have any special feelings towards the Army
over the Marine Corps. The reason I chose the Army is
because they have the Rangers and I have wanted for
a long while to become a Ranger is all. I just wanted
to explain the two better because of the so many
incredibly ignorant and mean posts made from each
service to each other (or fans of each service). Both
are friggin’ cool I think.

From: NavyGal on April 17, 2005 @ 3:52 pm
Comment: A little more history for SGT OF MARINES.

The Division’s history, (1st Infantry Division), AKA "The Big Red One" begins in 1917 when General John "Blackjack"
Pershing arrived in France with the First American Expeditionary Force. The "Fighting First" led the way for American
troops in World War I. Names like Cantigny, Soissons, St. Mihiel and the Argonne Forest tell the story of the gallantry
of the soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division, now wearing the famous "Big Red One" patch on their left shoulder.

During World War II, the 1st Infantry Division was the first to reach England, the first to fight the enemy in North Africa
and Sicily, the first on the beaches of Normandy in D-Day and the first to capture a major German City – Aachen.

See SGT OF MARINES every one has a job. Now have iIeducated you as to who arrives on the battlefield first ?

realize there is a rule in the military called dont ask dont tell.

You obviously dont know what your talking about.
And for a marine to go Airborne they have to go to Fort Benning> a US Army installation.
Its not about being more hardcore its about saving lives and serving. The army has sooo many sides like Delta Force
No marine can compare to that..bottom line

Comment: Well, Marine boot camp isn’t Special Forces training.
No Marine grunt is trained in Mountain warfare, Desert
warfar, Jungle warfare, diving, airborne operations,
HALO jumps, etc...along with a specialty.......Special
Forces troops are trained as Communications
Sergeants, Weapons Sergeants, Engineer Sergeants,
or Medical Sergeants, AND trained in one or more
foreign languages. They ain’t called the SPECIAL
FORCES for nothing!!! Navy SEALS are similar, but
more water-focused.

From: Army Recruit on April 27, 2005 @ 4:11 am
Comment: Like I said before, Marines are the toughest
CONVENTIONAL force. A standard Marine is better
trained than a standard soldier, sailor, or Airman,
but the Marines lack the Special Operations
forces of the other services. They have Recon,
but Recon Marines are moreo n par with Army
Rangers.

From: Army Recruit on April 27, 2005 @ 4:11 am
Comment: The whole idea of every Marine being a "Special
Forces" soldier was because the Corps itself
promoted this idea. They didn’t want any
Special Operations force because to them, ALL
Marines were "Special Operations" soldiers,
which blatantly wasn’t true. When the Corps
started to lose a lot of missions to the other
services, they either formed Recon Marines, or
already had them and made them Special
Operations-capable, officially. But they don’t
fall under the Special Operations command. I
am just guessing, but this is probably because
the Special Operations command is under the
Army, and the Marines don’t wanna be under the
Army’s command.

arctic combat training. My father was a forward observer
attached to an infantry unit, and still went through jungle
warfare training at Subic Bay in the Philippines, and did
some desert warfare training out at 29 Palms. As for mountain
and arctic, few get selected to go through that if they’re in the
regular infantry.

they worry about shooting straighter and faster thatn the enemy.

From: Army Recruit on April 28, 2005 @ 1:15 pm
Comment: Marine in a Year, Rangers and the Airborne have a very long and proud history
of brave acts. So does the Marine Corps. None of them are cowards. But you
can’t compare regular Marines to Rangers. Rangers are a very hardcore form
of Infantry.

And there is no such thing as "Marine Airborne." The Marine Corps gets their
airborne training from the Army. Marines may get Airborne-qualified, but the
only Marines that do any jumping really are the Recon team Marines.

From: 0311 on April 28, 2005 @ 5:46 pm
Comment: Army Recruit is correct. Marine in a year, are you joining the Marines to talk shit
or to serve your country?

However, Army Recruit, "hardcore" training is still less "hardcore" than even
"softcore" combat. An Army Engineer was the first person to receive the Medal
of Honor in the Iraqi conflict. Regardless of Service, MOS, rank, etc., some people
in general are just braver than others during times that try their very souls. I’m
sure some Air Force cooks are capable of more bravery than some Navy Seals
when the proverbial shit hits the fan. It all boils down to making sure your people
make it out alive.

Army Recruit appears to be the most educated. Why he wants to go become a Ranger insted of finishing college
exceeds rational thinking... but it is very commendable. I served four years, and now attend Univ of MD using the
GI Bill.

From: TazerStunner on April 29, 2005 @ 10:48 pm
Comment: I have an objection to one of Army Recruits comments. He is correct about not comparing Marines to specially trained
operators. My objection is with the comment about an Infantry soldier verses and Infantry Marine.
Being that Army Recruit has not accually earned the title U.S. Solder, he has not been in the military long enough to see the
difference between Army Infantry and Marine Infantry.
I will boldly say that our Marine Corps Infantry is more tough than regular Army Infantry. Infact, at West Point the students
learn Marine Corps tactics. The Army’s Cheif of Staff at many times displayed envy and commended the Marine Infantry for
conducting operations better than their own large Army Infantry.
Even during my time at Airborne School, my soldiers in my stick (squad) were less diciplended than my Marines of equal grade.

From: Army Recruit on April 29, 2005 @ 11:35 pm
Comment: Well TazerStunner, my reasons for leaving college are a bit detailed. I pretty
much hate college, but I can finish it later on, to make it really short. I know
a lot of Army guys that would argue your viewpoint, but being that I have
not earned that title yet and you have, I will not argue there.

I believe what you say though about the West Point cadets learnign Marine
Corps tactics---I have heard that the entire Army is more modeling itself on
the Corps. The reason being that the Army was traditionally very large and
meant to fight the Soviet Union in World War III un Europe, whereas the
Marine Corps has always been much quicker to deploy since it it more light.

From: Army Recruit on April 29, 2005 @ 11:39 pm
Comment: The Army will keep its heavy-fighting ability (like the Army
has the AH-64 Apache, the battletank of attack helos, which
the Marines do not have because it is too-heavy for their
doctrine of being fast and deployable, but for the 21st century,
the Army is modeling itself into a force that can deploy quicker.
I had heard that the Marines ran circles around the standard
Army in either Iraq or Afghanistan, and now the Army, if you
have noticed, is all about re-modeling itself into a completely
new Army.

By "Airborne," I mean the Marines do not have Airborne divisions
like the Army does (like 82nd, 101st, etc...).

Army units (such as Airborne, Rangers, or Special Forces) wear their Class-A uniform, they stuff their green dress
paints into their boots in the same way they wear their BDU’s (that camaflague utilities for us Marines)? I don’t know about the rest
of us, but thats like a civilian wearing a three piece suit and stuffing his pant lags into a pair of laced up Timberlands.

Also, everyone in the Army has been sporting a beret since 2001. Why is it that our "highly envied" Airborne and Ranger units wear berets
that don’t match any of their uniforms (except maybe the Rangers’ desert BDU’s)?
At least the "legs" wear black berets.

when SOCOM was formed Marines Special Operation units were incorperated in the USMC and how they ran things. This doesn’t mean Marine REcon aren’t less trained or better. All Special Operation units are the BEST at what they do and have NO equal.

woman who wears the uniform for serving our country.

Second, the difference between a service member and "snot nose zit faced jerk" who works
for a fast food chain is pride, esprit de corps, honor, and loyalty. A fast food worker lacks many
of the corps values that we service members hold. To them it is "just a job." For service members,
we eat, sleep, walk, and talk military customs. In the Marines, we are riflemen "first." To me, this
sounds like it is more than just a job. A fast food worker doesn’t get wakened at zero dark thirty in the
morning to stand "grill watch" nor are they charged with the responsibility of air dropping value meals
and "bag nasties" with a choice of soft drink to troops in the field.

Comment: We resort to cheap mud slinging fights about whose organization is better because we have pride in
our organizations. Though it is childish and extremely immature, it builds positive competition that gives
each individual organization incentive to become better at what they do. Thus, leads the U.S. Military as a
whole to be the greatest fighting force on planet Earth.

From: 0311 on May 5, 2005 @ 12:24 am
Comment: Motivation coming from within is better than motivation inspired by
juvenile competition...but hey, it’s a free country so think how you
want. Espris De Corps works for those who already have honor,
integrity, and a sense of pride and service ingrained within them, but
there are still many Marine shitbirds. I’ve seen Marines detract from
"keeping America beautiful", cut people off in traffic, etc., so the
military doesn’t change people from neglecting to perform
the most basic and simple decent actions that keep a societ harmonious.

I agree with you that it does take more dedication, courage, pride, and
discipline in general to be in the military, but getting through life is tough
no matter what a person does. To be honest, joining the Marines to me
was the easy way, because I wouldn’t be able to look back on my life and

U.S. Army Rangers are among the most elite, if not the most elite, combat soldiers in the world.
Being a Ranger is a function of attitude and state of mind, as well as a matter of skill and training.
It is the fraternity of a highly select group within the profession of arms that few will attempt to join
and into which even fewer will be initiated. To be a Ranger is a mark of excellence indicating a
degree of success that few will achieve. The challenge of being a Ranger is to prove your ability to
lead and command while undergoing significant mental, emotional, and physical stress. For those
who have mastered this challenge, the coveted title of "Army Ranger" is their reward.

Comment: The U.S. Special Operations Command is a joint venture between the various branches to organize the special operations forces of each. It was voluntary for the branches to join, and the U.S. Marine Corps had the option of submitting the so-called Force Recon. The Marines chose not to do so, however, because the brass felt that their interests were better served by having the Force Recon Marines answering directly to Marine ground commanders. The result of that decision? Well, Force Recon answers to the Marines, and the Marines cannot readily call upon the USSOCOM units. Good or bad decision? I’d say bad in the long term, since it isolates the Marines from some world class operators. All the "The Few, The Proud" attitude in the world won’t make Force Recon equal USSOCOM or JSOC in size, scope or budget. The Force Recon Marines are ’special’, however, and they do demand respect from other special operations operators and civilians alike, regardless of preferred branch of service.

From: JSOC on July 5, 2005 @ 5:13 am
Comment: As for the blousing of trousers in the U.S. Army, it is a traditional sign of respect. Only those men and women that volunteered and passed Airborne School can wear their trousers in that way, so it is a badge of honor that has existed for a very long time. Respect those men and women that have gone before you and those that will go after you. Now, to address the beret issue. The Airborne Rangers wore the black beret until the U.S. Army made the decision to make said beret the standard issue headwear, and then the Rangers switched to the tan beret (same as the British SAS). The Special Forces wear the green beret for the same reason as the bloused trousers. It is a sign of extreme accomplishment that demands respect from anyone, regardless of race, creed, nationality or preferred branch of service.

From: JSOC on July 5, 2005 @ 5:14 am
Comment: Lastly, qualifying for something is shown in the military. SEAL-qualified men are still allowed to wear their Eagle & Trident even if they switch to another branch. Airborne-qualified men and women are still allowed to wear their wings regardless of branch. Same goes for Military Free Fall (HALO/HAHO). Special Forces-qualified men are still allowed to wear their tab even if they switch branches. The same goes for the Ranger tab. Someone not in the Special Forces may not be able to wear the green beret and someone not in the 75th Ranger Regiment may not be able to wear the tan beret and Ranger scroll (unit insignia to be worn on the arm), but they still deserve the respect they earned by accomplishing what most can only dream of.

From: JSOC on July 5, 2005 @ 5:14 am
Comment: Most of the people commenting about this most likely couldn’t survive basic, but they are questioning the qualifications of fighting men (and some women, in the case of Airborne) that went above and beyond the call of duty. You only show your age and ignorance of the military when you degrade those quiet professionals that risk their lives to allow you the right to be free and as stupid as you want to be. Grow up a bit, and don’t talk about things you don’t understand.

history to fall back on. Rangers have Grenada...Panama....whatever those were not even real battles. People like my brother (Marine Infantry) were in southern Iraq clearing the way for the Army to get lost on the way to Bagdad. Tell me Army Rangers, how do you get lost and seperated
when there is only one road, and 1000 trucks, just follow the dust. But only the Army would give an MSM for something like that.

who carries the soldier’s coffin draped by the flag, and who kicks the protesters’ asses when they
try to burn the flag.

Comment: You show the same ignorance that others have shown on this thread.

The Rangers trace their history back to Major Robert Rogers and his nine companies of American colonists to fight for the British during the French and Indian War. That same doctrinal history continued through the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. The 1st U.S. Army Ranger Battalion was formed in 1942. Force Recon traces its history back to 1920, doctrine-wise. Force Recon was not officially formed until 1958. This throws out your whole "longer history makes Force Recon better".

The Rangers served with distinction in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Somalia, etc. Nothing gives you the right to question the loyalty or valor of those men that wear the Ranger tab.

The average Marine does not go through the same extensive training as those in USSOCOM. Force Recon men are elite, but nothing about them makes them any better or any worse than USSOCOM units.
